Mechanical Polishing
What Is Mechanically Polished Concrete?
Mechanically polished concrete is produced by grinding a concrete slab with progressively finer diamond tooling, from 25 grit up to 3000 grit. A lithium-based densifier is applied during the process, reacting with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete to form calcium silicate hydrate, a hard crystalline structure that permanently strengthens the surface. The resulting sheen comes from the concrete itself, not a topical coating. This is what distinguishes mechanical polishing from grind and seal, where the gloss comes from a sealer applied on top.
The finish is permanent and improves with use. Foot traffic actually enhances the sheen over time. Polished concrete is used in residential living areas, commercial retail, hospitality, industrial warehouses, and multi-residential common areas. It is one of the lowest lifecycle-cost flooring options available. Read more in our complete guide to polished concrete floors.
Finishes
Polished Concrete Finishes: Cream to Full Aggregate
Cream Polish (Minimal Exposure)
The lightest grind. The surface is ground just enough to smooth imperfections and reveal the natural cream of the cement paste. Cement paste remains dominant, producing a subtle, understated look that suits minimalist interiors and modern residential design.

Salt & Pepper (Light Exposure)
Fine aggregate begins to show through the cream surface, creating a natural speckled pattern. Every slab is unique. This is the most popular residential polished concrete finish on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Medium Exposure
Larger aggregate stones become visible, creating a terrazzo-like appearance with depth and character. The slab's natural stone content defines the look.

Full Aggregate Reveal
Maximum stone exposure. The full aggregate content of the slab is revealed, producing a bold, textured finish that is impossible to replicate. This is the statement finish for architectural and commercial projects.

Grind & Seal
A cost-effective alternative to full mechanical polishing. The slab is ground to a smooth finish, then sealed with a penetrating or topical sealer. Lower sheen than a mechanically polished floor, lower cost, and still a clean, durable result.

How It Works
How Polished Concrete Floors Are Made
Site Assessment
We inspect the slab condition, test hardness, identify any repairs needed, and discuss finish options. No surprises. You'll know exactly what to expect before we start.
Surface Preparation
If tiles, adhesive, coatings, or paint need removing, we handle it in-house. The slab is ground to a clean, level surface using industrial diamond tooling. HEPA-filtered dust extraction runs throughout.
Progressive Grinding
We grind through a series of diamond grits, from coarse (25 grit) to fine (3000 grit for full polish). Each pass refines the surface further, revealing aggregate and building sheen progressively.
Densifier Application
A lithium-based densifier is applied to the concrete, chemically reacting with the calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate. This creates a harder, denser surface with improved stain resistance and durability.
Final Polish & Seal
The final grits are applied to achieve the desired sheen level, from matte hone through to mirror-like high gloss. A guard or sealer is applied for ongoing protection.
Handover
We leave your site cleaner than we found it. The floor is ready for immediate foot traffic with full cure within 7 days. You receive care instructions for long-term maintenance.
Polished vs Honed
Polished Concrete vs Honed Concrete
Polished and honed concrete are produced using the same equipment, but the process stops at different points. Polished concrete is ground through high grits (800 to 3000), producing a glossy, reflective surface. It requires densifier application and is primarily an indoor finish. The gloss comes from the mechanical refinement of the concrete itself.
Honed concrete stops at lower grits (200 to 400), producing a matte or satin finish with no reflective sheen. It does not require a densifier, and works well for both indoor and outdoor applications including patios, pool surrounds, and driveways. Renovations
Polished Concrete for Existing Slabs and Renovations
Existing concrete slabs can be polished. You do not need a new pour. If the slab is structurally sound, it can be ground, densified, and polished to the same standard as a new slab. In many cases, old concrete produces the best results because the aggregate has fully settled and the slab has had years to cure and harden.
Renovation projects often require tile and adhesive removal before polishing can begin. ICGC handles the full scope in-house: tile removal, adhesive grinding, surface levelling, and final polish. One team, one quote. Our dust-free process makes this practical for occupied homes and tenanted commercial spaces.
